All optical processing of telecommunication signals since it is transparent to modulation format and transmission speed. Furthermore, it enables parallel processing of multiple data streams. However, despite numerous laboratory demonstrations, all-optical processing is not used in commercial solutions. One of the major factors limiting its adoption is that it requires high optical powers to perform efficiently. To mitigate that we are working in collaboration with colleagues from the Chemistry Department to develop highly nonlinear waveguides optimised for operation at telecommunication wavelengths. By combining the high level of optical confinement achievable with silicon photonics with novel nonlinear molecules, we want to create compact and efficient integrated all-optical devices.
